Welcome to the HIE Life!

This month, we’re featuring Chyncia Rodgers, a mother, wife, and owner of four businesses. Most notably, the owner of HIE Living, or “Hemp in Everything” a CBD company, grower, and manufacturer.

Since HIE’s founding in 2019, Chyncia has grown her company from a small CBD product producer, to now incorporating, growing and cultivating their own CBD, creating specialized blends for white-labeling, branding and design, to now consulting other small business owners who want to get into the industry.

When did you start your business?

“I started Hie Living in August of 2019.”

What is your professional background (what industries/roles did you have before starting your business)?

“I’ve spent most of my career in the cosmetic consulting and sales industry.”

Why did you choose to start your business?

“Working in full-time commission sales gave me the opportunity to control my salary. It’s very similar to owning your own business, the only difference is you don’t have the overhead. I worked in commission sales for over twelve years and I survived it. Meaning I was never fired or laid off for not meeting my goals. If I didn’t produce I didn’t get paid. Most people aren’t built for commission sales, it can be stressful and risky. There are no off days in sales identical to entrepreneurship. When you’re not at work you’re always strategizing for the next day or thinking of ways to improve and get to the next level. I figured if I can take on the overhead, find something I’m passionate about, they sky’s the limit!” 

What was your first objective when you founded your business?

“My first objective WAS to earn a profit.” Emphasis on “was.”

How many people work for your business?

“I have a total of 12 employees.”

What products or services do you offer? (feel free to name ALL of your businesses)

“I own a convenience store and food truck. Our bail bonding business assists people getting their family or loved ones out of jail. With MCMZ Real Estate, I purchase older homes and flip them to sell. Hie Living started as a business to consumer business, where I formulated CBD products both edible and topical.

Recently, my business has switched from business to business. Now, I consult with other business owners who aspire to have their own product line with/without CBD. The entire creation process from labeling, selecting ingredients, formulation, and branding is offered in my services.”

What methods do you use to promote your business?

Social media, billboards, and referrals.”

What are your business objectives?

“The first, of course, is to earn a profit as quickly as possible. Create a fun work culture with competitive salaries. Set short-term and long-term goals to ensure growth and profitability. Offer results driven quality products to my customers with the highest level of customer service.” 

Why did you choose to start a business in this industry?

“I’ve always had a strong interest in holistic medicine, natural cures and remedies. When the farm bill was introduced in NC I started researching Hemp and its benefits and uses. It was unbelievable the amount of studies and information was available decades ago. With my background is the cosmetic file and hemp as a natural remedy I felt like was the perfect marriage.” 

How would you characterize the working culture at your company?

“We have a  fun workplace because it’s a relaxed, supportive work environment. It’s a vibe! Our work culture is one that prioritizes the well-being of employees, offers support at all levels within the organization, and has policies in place that encourage respect, trust, empathy, and support. We focus on achieving great things and also enjoy doing it.”

How does your business give back to the community?

“We sponsor two charity events a year from turkey drives to back to school supplies giveaways. Last year, we sponsored a food truck event and fed all the local government employees. Without the community around it’s impossible to be successful. Our growth is due our community’s loyalty and support.”

What makes your company unique from its competitors?

“One unique aspect about Hie is that we create and formulate our own products, but exist as a family company first. Because I created Hie as a response to needs I noticed in my own family, I make it a priority to refer to them for new products, logistics, and even marketing strategies. Two years ago there weren’t many skin care products formulated with CBD. Since there was a need I wanted to fulfill it.  My goal is to stay on the cutting edge of everything CBD. All of my products are third party tested and formulated with love.”

How many hours a day do you spend working on your business? Hours per day on ALL businesses?

“Minimum 12 hours a day, 6 days a week.”

How would you characterize your business’s success thus far?

“HIE Living earns its revenue from sales. The most basic way we measure success is by setting monthly sales goals and celebrating when we reach them. I characterize our success by meeting goals and also how well my team has grown and taken on new roles.”

How long did it take your business to turn a profit?

“It took HIE  Living about 18 months to turn a profit.”

What’s next on the horizon for you and your company (upcoming projects/partnerships, etc.)?

“I’m looking forward to building relationships with spa owners, estheticians, and aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own product line.” 

What’s your suggestion for other women who want to get into the cannabis industry?

“Being an entrepreneur isn’t for everyone. It often takes years of hard work, long hours, and no recognition to become successful. You never stop working, there’s no punching in and out. You’re always in it!

Freedom is knowing you’re creating a legacy for generations to come. As far as the women looking to get into the cannabis industry, my advice would be don’t get into this industry primarily for the money. Make sure it’s of interest to you and you’re passionate about it. It’s a very competitive industry so make sure your product or service is unique and has a purpose. Build relationships with people in similar businesses, both new and seasoned. My best connections are with people who’ve been in the industry for years; they can offer you help and advice…even before you ask!”
