Menstrual cramps are awful. Like put me out of commission for a week awful. Which is why the idea of CBD oil for period pain seemed so appealing.
They haven’t always been this way, but as I got older, it seems that things have taken a turn for the worse in that department.

For years, I was taking ibuprofen every time I felt cramping coming on.
But, after a little bit of research and education, I found that this option was really rather dangerous.
Taking pain meds is normal right?
Nearly every woman I know pops a few Advil once a month. However, it can wreak havoc on the kidneys and liver.
This, was news to me. I also learned that these commonly used pain killers take a major toll on the heart.
I’ll admit that I tend to be paranoid when it comes to my health. However, I wasn’t taking ibuprofen once and a while.
I was popping those pills every single month since I was thirteen. Sometimes, multiple times a day, for several days in a row.

I’m not great at math, but if you work out the numbers, that’s a whole lot of pressure on the organs.
So, I decided to look for other options to tackle my menstrual cramps. I’d been hearing a lot of buzz around CBD oil and lotions for period pain.
Derived from the marijuana plant, CBD (cannabinoid) oil is said to have lots of healing properties.
It’s been shown to reduce inflammation and curb pain. So, I figured I would give it a try.
While there are a lot of ways to take CBD oil, I wanted to go for a balm/lotion. I used a muscle and joint balm, which I put on my stomach for the first three days of my period.

It comes in a stick form (kind of like a glue stick) and I rubbed it on my lower abdomen, between my belly button and my pubic bone.
I also rubbed some across my lower abdomen (where my ovaries are.) The stick has 150 mg of CBD, which is a large amount compared to many other products I saw.
The first few minutes, I didn’t feel much of anything. But, after about 7 minutes, I could feel a warming sensation.
It felt nice, and lasted for about 20 minutes after the onset. I used the balm about three times a day for three days (the worst of the cramps.)
While the warming sensation was pretty reliable, I didn’t feel much else.
It seemed that the CBD balm didn’t do much to stop my cramps. But, I do think that the warming sensation helped me to feel better.
A lot of women use heating pads to stop cramps, and it seemed like the balm offered some similar benefits.
Mentally, using the CBD balm made me feel a little better, so there could of been a little placebo action going on.
I may continue to try the balm during my next period. And, I may try using other CBD products too! We’ll see.
